The 14 Neo-Soul Chords PDF, three pages fanned out

Every shape, its root, and the one-to-four move

The 14 chord diagrams from the video with fingerings, where the root sits, and the same shape moved to the IV chord.

These are the chords I actually use when I play neo-soul: the major 7 family, the minor 7 family, the dominant 9, 9sus4 and 13, the altered 7♯5, the half diminished and the diminished 7. Every one of them is a movable shape: learn it on fret 3 and you have it in every key.

Each diagram marks the root in red and shows the same shape on fret 8, so you can play a one-four in any key straight away. The diminished chords get their own card: the same shape every three frets.

This PDF goes with my YouTube lesson: everything I show in the video, drawn out, plus the way I want you to practise it.

What's inside

Six things you'll learn

1

How to practise every shape

Muscle memory: play it, let go, come back. Thirty seconds per chord, every day.

2

The major 7 family

Gmaj7 on the E string, Cmaj9 on the A string, and the 6/9 that comes from the same family.

3

The minor 7 family

Gmin7, Cmin9, the rootless Gmin9 move and Gmin11: arguably the most important sound in this style.

4

The dominant 7 family

C9, the neo-soul G9sus4, G13 and the altered G7♯5.

5

Half diminished and diminished

Cmin7♭5, Cdim7 and Gdim7, and why the diminished moves every three frets.

6

Quick reference

All fourteen shapes on one page: strings, fingers, root and the one-to-four for each.

Why it works

What the video shows, explained on paper

1

One to four

Pretend G is your one: the four is C. Same shape, root on fret 8. Once you see it, you can play a one-four in any key.

2

Where the root is

Every diagram marks the root in red, on the 6th or the 5th string. Know the root and you know which chord you are playing, anywhere on the neck.

3

Every three frets

The diminished 7 is symmetrical: the same four notes every three frets. That is where those neo-soul moves up the neck come from.

All of it in chord diagrams with fingerings, ready to print and keep on the music stand.

Who it's for

If you can play a barre chord, you can play every shape in here. And if you already know a few of them, the one-to-four move and the root positions are what tie them together, so you stop thinking in shapes and start thinking in keys.

My tip number one, before anything else:

muscle memory.
